Last week’s Jason Mraz concert

last-weeks-jason-mraz-concert

Thousands of fans braved the downpour last week while waiting for the Jason Mraz concert…and many were rewarded ten-fold. Here’s the setting: The New Uptown Amphiteatre at the NC Music Factory. If you haven’t heard of it, you must get familiar. This is the new Charlotte…the Charlotte that will draw top concerts, DJ’s, and celebrities and promises to fill the over 35 acre entertainment complex with restaurants, clubs and bars. Long story short, its in the 4th Ward, an area that has long been vacant from industry. The historic buildings are being restored to their original character and will be the home to galleries, lofts and workspaces. Now back to the Mraz show…

The rain began partway through K’Naan’s set. But folks were forced to exit the 5,000 capacity Uptown Amphitheatre due to lightning. Now what? With some quick production, the crew readied the stage at the neighboring Fillmore Theatre. Those who waited out the storm were granted entrance (up to 1,800 ticket-holders) to the Fillmore for an acoustic set: A quick few songs by Bushwalla (check him out!), 45 mintues of G. Love (solo) and then THREE hours of Jason Mraz, making it well worth the stay.

G. Love setlist

Live Nation has since announced that Jason Mraz will return to The Uptown Amphitheatre to play a rescheduled concert on September 10. Patrons who could not attend the acoustic performance should keep their tickets as they will be valid night of show on the new date.

BeadLush and the Sleepy Poet are Creative Outlets Here in Charlotte

beadlush-and-the-sleepy-poet-are-creative-outlets-here-in-charlotte

One of my favorite hobbies is to create beautiful jewelry using vintage brooches, semi-precious stones, and Swarovski Crystals.  I sell a lot of my creations on ETSY, which is a website for the craft inclined artists online, I can’ t say enough good things about how awesome Etsy.com is.  Anyways, a lot of times people ask me where I get my supplies and while I do get a lot of materials online from various retailers the most beautiful and unique items have to be handpicked.  Charlotte has a lot of great locations for finding artistic materials.  Two of my favorite locations include BeadLush and The Sleepy Poet Antique Mart.

Beadlush is a quaint little house off of Plaza in the Plaza-Midwood neighborhood.  If you know where the Harris Teeter is then keep going and it will be on your right beside the Fire Station.  This past Tuesday I went into the store to find some materials to compliment the Sodalite stones I wanted to use in a necklace.  Lydia, the owner of BeadLush was so helpful and helped me pick out some beautiful Agate beads.  The finished product looks like this…

The vintage brooch using Swarovski crystals and white beads was found at the Sleepy Poet.  I absolutely love this place and literally could spend an entire afternoon getting lost inside.  They have everything you can ever imagine from Jewelry to furniture, collector items to clothing.  The people that work there are always helpful and friendly and the entire experience is enjoyable.  If you are in the market for something vintage/antique I highly recommend this store.

Where are some of the stores that you like to visit for artistic inspiration and materials?

Polished- A Nice Slice of Luxury

polished-a-nice-slice-of-luxury

Yesterday I decided to make an appointment to have a manicure and pedicure at Charlotte’s most famous nail salon, Polished.  The unique little salon is located on South Boulevard right beside my favorite bagel joint, Owen’s Bagels (but that’s a whole other post).  Since I work in the Ballantyne area I  made my appointment for 6:30 pm to ensure I had enough time to get there and to pick up some cash on the way.  As soon as I walked in I was shocked, the place was packed! Now I’m not a Polished virgin, I have been here plenty of times before to know that this is place is always hoppin’.  But to see so many young professional women, and even some men all in one place made me think… umm what recession?!?

I myself was acting as a Recessionista because luckily I had a gift certificate that I received for a Christmas Gift.  But I kid you not, all 16 massage chairs were in use with people waiting for their turn and then all the manicure bars were packed with girls (and a few boys).  Polished has a reputation for being a fun place to hang out and gossip with your girlfriends over a nice glass of wine while getting the ultimate luxurious treatment of sitting in the massage chairs and getting your toes done.  The people that work at Polished are always so friendly and I always enjoy my experience there. If you are looking for all the young women in Charlotte you can definitely find them at Polished on South.  If that location is too busy for you then ventures over to their new location on Providence Road beside the Panera Bread.  I heard they are busy but not crazy…yet!

I feel like Polished is a very unique little gem in the Queen City.  Are there other businesses and parts of Charlotte that you find unique to our city?

Tasty-Yo

tasty-yo

Sunday to me is usually a day of relaxing… and relaxing to me usually involves eating some sort of delicious food. So around lunch time, I headed into the very lovely neighborhood of NoDa. Little did I know I was going to stumble upon one of the very best dessert shops I have ever been to – and I’ve been to a lot of dessert shops.

Tasty-YoAfter being completely stuffed from a delicious lunch at Cabo Fish Taco, I  started walking back to my car and saw the adorable sign for Tasty-Yo right above my head. They have just recently opened (Saturday, July 25) and are located on the main street in NoDa. I remembered my fellow blogger, Krissy, mentioning that there was a new dessert place opening and how it was supposed to be delicious.

So I headed inside to check it out.

I recommend to all of you reading this to tell your friends about Tasty-Yo – it is the best! First, its not ice cream yogurt, it is actual yogurt (the kind that comes in the carton) but it’s frozen. Second, there are all the toppings in the world you can choose from, including fresh fruit from the Farmers Market. Lastly, and this is the best part, it is only 90 calories (because we all know it is bathing suit season).

Anyone know of any other great dessert places to try in Charlotte?

Weddings Unveiled Surprise in Charleston, SC

weddings-unveiled-surprise-in-charleston-sc

This past weekend I packed up my things to head down to Charleston for a weekend in the sun celebrating my good friend the Bachelorette Laura.  Sorry to have abandoned the Queen City for the weekend, but sometimes its nice to get away even if its only for a day or two.  Anyways, I digress… So as we were headed to Folly Beach for some fun in the sun we stopped by the nearest Harris Teeter to pick up some water, ice and of course all the gossip/fashion/wedding magazines we could find.

Since I was the other engaged girl in the group I decided to pick up a wedding magazine.  I purchased a copy of Weddings Unveiled, a magazine that I had my eye on for a couple of weeks now, but just never got around to purchasing.  This wedding is actually produced here in Charlotte, NC. While flipping through the pages I came to an advertisement for Hayden Olivia Bridal Boutique.  Hayden Olivia is an awesome bridal boutique owned by Heather Batt.  Heather and I worked together for her Sex and the City fashion show in March.  All of the jewelry used in the fashion show was from my Designs By Krissy collection.  So anyways, in the advertisement was the rose necklace I loaned her.  I was elated to see it in a magazine.  You will have to check out the magazine if you’re interested in bridal fashion and jewelry.

So while in Charleston, besides getting excited about seeing my work in a magazine, we had a blast!  We went to the rooftop bar at the Market Pavilion Hotel, had dinner at Social, which is a tapas and wine bar, and then continued to paint the town.  One of my favorite things to do is to just go out and dance my booty off!  We certainly did that at Light. This place literally had the best DJ  spinning some great tunes.  The prices were really reasonable and all six of us just had so much fun together! I can’t tell you everything that happened that weekend, because what happens during the bachlorette party stays at the bachlorette party.  But what I will say is that the Charleston Bachlorette party was a success on all fronts!

What is your favorite southern location/city to get away to?

The Booty Loop

the-booty-loop

Lately I have been on a mission to start biking. I usually run a few times a week, but have be noticing more and more when I’m on the road there seem to be a lot more bikers than runners. This has intrigued me. While it is very motivational to see all the avid bikers out there, what I ran into this weekend may have finally tipped me over edge to take the plunge and get started with biking.

This weekend around the Meyers Park neighborhood was the eighth annual 24 Hour of Booty. Bikers of all ages ride for 24 hours on the three mile course, The Booty Loop, to raise money for good causes: The Lance Armstrong Foundation, The Keeping Pounding Fund at Carolinas Medical Center and the Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas.

24HoursofBooty

While I was jogging around the neighborhood I stopped off to check out the bikers’ rest area, appropriately named “Bootyville”. Set up was located in the parking lot of Myers Park Traditional Elementary School and Queens University. Tons of people (of all ages) peddled into numerous tents of vendors with food (I saw lots of peanut butter sandwiches) and drinks (lots of Vitamin Water – my fav!)   While most of the bikers were crowded around a giant flat screen watching Tour de France, I checked out all the different biking sponsors.

My thoughts – biking is pretty intense, and I like it! I’m excited to finally get out there on the road and start practicing the Booty Loop. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll be a participant…

Do you bike ride in the Charlotte area? Any comments or tips for beginners like me?

Chima Brazilian Steakhouse

chima-brazilian-steakhouse

Chima, the Brazilian steakhouse on South Tryon Street in Uptown, extended its restaurant week special offer for an additional week, so I had dinner there on Thursday night. It was my second visit and it was quite good. I suspected that they might hold back on their best meats because of the lower restaurant week price, but both of my favorites, the top sirloin (their house special) and the leg of lamb, as well as filet mignon and other good cuts were available in abundance. I’ve been to Brazilian churrascarias in several cities, and while Chima may not be my all-time favorite, it is definitely high on my list – and much better than Brazas, the other option here in town.

If you’ve never been to one, a waiter comes to your table and takes your drink order, and you can help yourself to a large salad bar in the center of the room with everything from cold cuts to calamari salad. At your table, a small card that says something to the effect of “yes please” on one side and “no thanks” on the other is your signal to the traditionally-dressed gauchos circulating with skewers of meat that you want to be served. They’ll swarm around the table offering bacon-wrapped chicken, chorizo, pork loin and many different cuts of beef.

The downside to these places is that the pace of the meal feels kind of frenzied; it wouldn’t make a good spot for a business meeting. Unless everyone at the table flips their card to “no thanks”, your conversation is constantly interrupted by gauchos offering more meat.

If you are a beef-lover like I am, the trick is to reject things like pork and chicken, which can tend to be dry and tasteless. Accept only the best cuts of beef because you’ll fill up fast. I load everything up with lots of chimichurri sauce. Chima’s salad bar is average compared to other churrascarias I’ve visited, but the beef is delicious, and that’s the most important part.

D.D. Peckers

d-d-peckers

D.D. Peckers in South West Charlotte
10403-E Park Road
Charlotte NC 28210
704-541-4113

One of the best wing stops in South Charlotte. It has the feel of an East Amherst pub with plenty of good eats.

More to come

—- Update —-

The wings were amazing!  I got their hot wings and the hot ranch.  All I can say is that by the end of the meal my lips were numb.  DD Peckers is kind of hidden off Park road South.  It is accross from the ER and if you arent paying attention you will drive right by the sign.  Sometimes the hardest places to find turn out to be the best in town.  They obviously have a following because the place was fairly full.  Even with a good crowd there was no waiting at the door so you can definately get in and out quickly if you are pressed for time.
